Summer Hair Care Tips: DreamCatchers Do’s and Don’ts

Hair extensions are perfect for every season but are especially hot during the summer. Properly taking care of your hair extensions will not only protect your natural hair but also help you maintain your extensions longer. We’ve collected a few essential summer dos and don’ts that extensions experts agree will help keep your DreamCatchers hair extensions looking fresh all summer long.

Don’t:

Sleep with your hair wet: going to bed with your hair wet can cause tangling, damaging your extensions and natural hair. It can also cause the extensions to slip or come loose.)

Do:

Properly dry hair before sleeping. We recommend using low-heat hair drying and working your way from end to root until dry. It's then advised to braid your hair before sleeping which prevents knotting and if possible, use a silk pillow case reducing static.

Don’t:

Use Chemical based sunscreens. Especially in the case of facial sunscreen, it’s crucial to choose a product wisely since it’s in such proximity to your hair. Chemical sunscreens can diminish the quality of your extensions when in close contact. The chemicals in the sunscreen can even change the color of your extensions especially with direct exposure to the sun for hours on end.

Do:

Wear mineral-based sunscreen. Mineral-based sunscreen products are dermatologist-recommended for your skin, and should you inadvertently get this on your extensions they will be a lot less inclined to cause color changes. Save your extensions and your skin by incorporating this product.

Don’t:

Brush your hair fully wet. When wet, the hair is the most vulnerable because it stretches if brushed, and unlike a rubber band, it doesn’t just snap back into shape. If the extension has been stretched, the extensions can begin to slip and come out.

Do:

Brush your extensions when your hair is dry. We also recommend brushing your hair 2-3 times daily to avoid tangling and decrease the amount of tension applied to your hair.

Don’t:

Get your hair wet with chlorine or salt water. Because hair is porous, it’s easy to become damaged when swimming in salt or chlorine. Chlorine can also affect the color of your hair after all it is a relatively harsh chemical and when left in your hair and extensions and you spend extended periods of time in the sun this allows the chlorine to literally “cook” in your hair creating discoloration of the extensions such as pink and brassy hues. This is more apparent in communal pools and especially hot tubs. Swimming with extensions is okay, but we recommend giving it a quick rinse once you are out.

Do:

Use a leave-in conditioner before hitting the pool or beach. A leave-in conditioner will protect your hair when swimming. Because K-tip, Weft, I-tip, and Tape extensions are porous, it’s better to immerse them with nutrients rather than getting them saturated with pool chemicals.

Don’t:

Swim with your hair down. Not only does this increase the surface area of hair hitting the water, but it also creates opportunities opens you up for tangling. This can cause more tension on your natural hair and open you up to possible damage.

Do:

Braid your hair or put it up in a bun before a dip. Wearing a simple protective style like a braid or bun when swimming can significantly decrease the likelihood of tangling.

Don’t:

Miss out on fun summer activities because you’re worried about your extensions.

Do:

Plan ahead so you can be prepared and maintain beautiful hair all summer long!
